The Foreclosure Crisis Marks The Transition From The Fat Age To The Lean Age In American History

The foreclosure crisis marks the transition from the fat age to the lean age in American history. It is unfortunate for Barack Obama that he took over the mantle of the president at a time when the lean years have started. He understands it but as yet has not come forth with a clear cut plan of regenerating the country.

Obama was victorious because he was able to make a dent in the large number of undecided voters that included Republican businessmen who had never ever voted for a Democrat. In their heart of hearts they knew that the country was moving on the wrong tracks and that there was a desperate need for building the nation on the domestic front and for this McCain was not the suitable person.
They reasoned that Obama, had the talent, temperament and charisma to pull the country out of the foreclosure morass by initiating a new programme that would take America not to the moon but into the new century.

But unfortunately although Obama constantly harps on nation building he has chased the various issues like health care, energy, education, infrastructure and deficit financing on separate tracks and not taking them together as one whole for building the nation. Thus each initiative has appeared to something standing alone targeting votes from particular constituencies. This has made these programmes individual victims of petty opposition and lobbying tactics.

So ‘Obamism’ looks like a hodgepodge dominated by health care without giving proper attention to new innovations and job generation. The vast potential that still rests in America and Americans has not been made proper use of.
It is however no easy task to take over the reins when the lean years were just starting. But Obama has to convince the people to invest in tomorrow while paying for the past extravagance simultaneously. Money has to be found for new schools and the infrastructure – the requirement is pressing. At the same time entitlement cuts would have to be accepted at a time when confidence in the government is at its lowest point.

To make matters worse the Republicans now are now in their most irresponsible mood. Having had a hand in running up the deficit during the Bush years the Republicans are now not willing to accept any responsibility if there is any move to increase taxes.
